Gabriela

I use integrative approach to counselling grounded in Rogerian person-centred therapy, which means that you can expect me to be authentically present in the session with you, while utilising reflective curiosity to collaboratively explore the themes that have arisen for you in-session and your daily life. Together, we will explore the past to inform the present moment, and draw on your values and strengths to build resilience in overcoming current or enduring difficulties and stress. The techniques I use stem from my professional interest and experience in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, mindfulness and acceptance and commitment therapy techniques, (self-)compassion and loving-kindness practices, and psychodynamic approaches. Additionally, I have a Level 1 training in The Gottman Method, which is an evidence-based approach to couples counselling. I have experience working with couples and adult individuals, working through interpersonal conflicts and authenticity in communication, processing grief and loss of different nature, and supporting care partners of people living with dementia. I hold a registration with the Australian Counselling Association (ACA). My professional qualifications consist of a Bachelor of Counselling degree, followed by a Master of Adult and Continuing Education, and a Master of Mental Health with specialisation in Psychotherapy. I am currently completing a PhD program in Psychotherapy at the University of Queensland Faculty of Medicine, specialising in psychotherapy to manage anxiety symptoms in people living with cognitive impairment and dementia. While I come from understanding applied clinical research and practice, I appreciate your individuality and needs, and will invite you to join me in navigating the course of our sessions to your perceived benefit.
